Anne Reese Hernandez

Anne Reese - Hernandez

There are many ways to make a stand as a preservationist. Primitive painter, Anne Reese Hernandez not only lives in a charming turn-of-the-century Victorian cottage in the heart of the Houston Heights, but for nearly 20 years she has painted and drawn scenes from the neighborhood – historic homes, churches, shops and local period architecture.

Besides historic buildings such as the Shamrock Hotel, Anne has also painted portraits of the late musician Huey Long of the Ink Spots, the late artist Bert Long Jr., many self portraits, and intimate studies of her garden and pets.

Anne Reese Hernandez was born in Gueydan, Louisiana and is now a noted Houston artist. Anne studied at the Museum of Fine Arts Houston, Museum School with mentors such as Dorothy Hood, time travels in her work back to earlier days living in a West University bungalow, with works such as ‘The Village Flowery”, Croissant Brioche”, and the Village Five and Dime.

Most of the historic structures depicted in her work are still intact, and rendered in a folk art style, featuring cheerful and bright acrylic color on canvas, a match for Victorian houses, and colorful gardens. Anne also works in watercolor on paper, and there are works which are all pointillism. Her images are windows in time, quaint and compelling. Her work is widely collected and she is a prolific painter who has been showing for decades.
