These are my two dogs I had for a long time. The little brown dog had a skin condition. I gave him special baths at the wonderful Vet on Yale St. He had a thyroid condition . But the medicines and the baths did not work. Though he didn’t look so good he always had a great zest for life. The Vet said he was a trooper though he was sick and in the end had cancer, he never gave up and still lived a long life. I lost him first and I thought I would at least maybe have Eyepatch for another year but her kidneys shut down a month later and I lost her as well. Now I have my precious Rosie who is my best friend.

There are many ways to make a stand as a preservationist. Artist Anne Reese Hernandez not only lives in a charming turn-of-the-century Victorian cottage in the heart of the Houston Heights, but for nearly 20 years she has painted and drawn scenes from the neighborhood – historic homes, churches, shops and local period architecture.

Most of the historic structures depicted in her work are still intact, and rendered in a folk art style, featuring cheerful and bright acrylic color on canvas, a match for Victorian houses, and colorful gardens. Anne also works in watercolor on paper, and there are works which are all pointillism. Her images are windows in time, quaint and compelling. Her work is widely collected and she is a prolific painter who has been showing for decades.

Lost and Occasionally Found https://heightsartgallery.com/product/lost-and-occasionally-found/ Mon, 05 Jul 2021 19:51:12 +0000 https://heightsartgallery.com/?post_type=product&p=859 J. Todd Allison  |  50” x 30” x 2”, Unframed  |  Oil on panel

Five is perfect, but very difficult to keep track of.

This mostly recent group of paintings is in response to past years’ unprecedented events and activities, where the inordinate amount of highs and lows demanded respite. With these works my process seemed to be an escape from a unique year and was driven by my process of recounting housed memories. The birds or their reference are players here, because they have remained constant in my daily activities reminding me that it all is okay.

Conversations along with some fleeting images that served as reminders of places, objects, designs, etc. have served as my impetus for these visual explorations. This was a conscious effort of mine to shed the present and actively participate with the inspired memories. The gun and hammer imagery have faded in this group of works, while mostly birds serve the relationship metaphor, whether building, destroying or just providing a path outside the compositions.

“Every corner in a house, every angle in a room, every inch of secluded space in which we like to hide, or withdraw into ourselves, is a symbol of solitude for the imagination; that is to say, it is the germ of a room, or of a house.”  – Gaston Bachelard
