There are many ways to make a stand as a preservationist. Artist Anne Reese Hernandez not only lives in a charming turn-of-the-century Victorian cottage in the heart of the Houston Heights, but for nearly 20 years she has painted and drawn scenes from her family and her neighborhood – historic homes, churches, shops and local period architecture.

Most of the historic structures depicted in her work are still intact, and rendered in a folk art style, featuring cheerful and bright acrylic color on canvas, a match for Victorian houses, and colorful gardens. Anne also works in watercolor on paper, and there are works which are all pointillism. Her images are windows in time, quaint and compelling. Her work is widely collected and she is a prolific painter who has been showing for decades.

These are my two dogs I had for a long time. The little brown dog had a skin condition. I gave him special baths at the wonderful Vet on Yale St. He had a thyroid condition . But the medicines and the baths did not work. Though he didn’t look so good he always had a great zest for life. The Vet said he was a trooper though he was sick and in the end had cancer, he never gave up and still lived a long life. I lost him first and I thought I would at least maybe have Eyepatch for another year but her kidneys shut down a month later and I lost her as well. Now I have my precious Rosie who is my best friend.

The time of quarantine seems to magnify both the rewards and isolation of caring for children. We are thankful for our comfortable home and the privilege of being able to stay at home but, as a mother, there are no breaks. The attention of children is constant, the guilt of parenting gafs is pervasive. We are all always in the same room.

Inspired by the lifestyle paintings of Jan Steen and portraits of John Singer Sargent, these images attempt to capture a moment of motherhood that is all at once overwhelming, rewarding, lonely, chaotic and heartwarming.
